I Thought Europe Was So Much More Sophisticated Than Us Rubes...

So what explains this?  From the June 10, 2012 U.K. Guardian:
The United Nations is increasingly concerned at the spread in Europe of "baby boxes" where infants can be secretly abandoned by parents, warning that the practice "contravenes the right of the child to be known and cared for by his or her parents", the Guardian has learned.
The UN Committee on the Rights of the Child, which reports on how well governments respect and protect children's human rights, is alarmed at the prevalence of the hatches – usually outside a hospital – which allow unwanted newborns to be left in boxes with an alarm or bell to summon a carer.
The committee, a group of 18 international human rights experts based in Geneva, says that while "foundling wheels" and baby hatches had disappeared from Europe in the last century, almost 200 have been installed across the continent in the past decade in nations as diverse asGermanyAustriaSwitzerlandPolandCzech Republic and Latvia. Since 2000, more than 400 children have been abandoned in the hatches, with faith groups and right-wing politicians spearheading the revival in the controversial practice.
I thought shame about illegitimacy was an artifact of narrow-minded Christianity--something that Europe jettisoned some years back.

  1. This is a bit of no win situation. You don't want to make it easy for people to abandon children but on the other hand, if they're going to, these drop offs are better than being left on a street corner or in a dumpster.

I'll wager the biggest drivers of child abandonment are drugs and mental health issues. Maybe poverty too but I've seen some poor families that do quite well raising their kids.

  2. Discretionary abortion is acceptable, even admirable, but to anonymously request the adoption of an unwanted infant is immoral.

    Transnational progressivism sure is illogical.

  3. Sorry to comment twice, but it really just occurred to me that I was wrong a moment ago.

The very existence of "baby hatches" is likely to reduce the abortion rate. That is why they are bad! The leftists on the "UN Committee on the Rights of the Child" (and at the Guardian newspaper) don't want any infants adopted, they want them aborted before they contribute to global warming. Baby hatches must be abolished to futher immiserate and coerce pregnant teens into aborting.
